Wisconsin National Mountain Bike Patrol, the WDNR, and the LaGrange Fire and Rescue Working Together

You may have seen a large gathering of emergency and DNR vehicles at the Muir lately. On Saturday, October 27, the Wisconsin National Mountain Bike Patrol, the WDNR, and the LaGrange Fire and Rescue held a combined effort Training Day at the John Muir Trails. The main focus of the Event was the learning of the locations of the Emergency Access Routes at the John Muir Trails, which will Help Rescuers to reach any injured persons more quickly, easily and safely. It will also Help to keep damage to the Trails at a minimum when a rescue vehicle is needed to extract an injured person. Plans for increased cooperation between the NMBPatrol, the WDNR, and the LaGrange Fire and Rescue Squad are in the works. This will benefit all Trail users who are in need of Emergency Medical attention.

Act 168: the Sporting Heritage Bill Important Announcement.

Earlier this year the legislature passed Act 168, the Sporting Heritage Bill, which expands hunting and trapping in state parks (including state trails). We are encouraging all trail users to attend the listening sessions to review the proposed implementation plans for this bill and provide feedback on the draft proposals to Natural Resources Board members. By providing their perspectives, they can help shape the final proposals, expected to go to the Natural Resources Board for final approval in December.  Bikers need to have input into the implementation plans for Act 168 as it may greatly impact our safe access to trails on state parks and other lands.  Paul Sandgren from the DNR has made it clear that he, and his staff, are opposed to this new law, and would like anyone who disagrees to also, attend this meeting, or let their feelings known to the Natural Resources Board.

The listening sessions will all begin at 6:30 p.m. and attendees that would like to speak or submit written comments should sign up at the door on arriving at the session. Locations are:

Fall Color Festival

The Fall Color Festival was a great Success thanks to all the volunteers who worked to put it all together.  The trails were in great shape and the weather turned out to be beautiful for the event. The rain never did materialize at the Kettle like it had in other areas of Wisconsin and by 11 am the sun was out and it was a beautiful fall day.  Thank you to the Fall Color Festival Board for all the time they invested putting this fundraiser together.  Also we are grateful for all the racers and spectators who turned out to support the Muir Trail system we all love.  It truly was a fun time.  Trek donated a mountain bike again the year.  The Super Fly was the highlight of the raffle.   Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the Event.  We are looking forward to an even bigger event to mark this milestone.  Watch for news on this next spring and summer.
